What does Joomla! mean?

The name Joomla is a phonetic spelling for the Swahili word "Jumla," which means "all together" or "as a whole". This name was chosen from thousands of community suggestions, and even went through an arduous review session by branding and marketing professionals who also felt that Joomla was the best choice. The Joomla! name is also a trademark. Policies for use of the Joomla! name can be found here.

The Joomla! name and logos are not trademark free and are not copyright free. In most cases, to use the Joomla! name or Joomla! logo(s), you must request permission from Open Source Matters.

"Joomla!" is our name, and as such it deserves everyone's best efforts to protect it. It defines our brand for both our software and our community. It signifies our reputation for excellence. We have specific guidelines for when and how to properly use our trademarks in public-facing content such as marketing materials and web pages. Those guidelines are excessive within a controlled user-facing environment like the Joomla! backend.

Can you use Joo / Joom / Joomla in your domain name?

You must apply for a license because such a use can potentially infringe on and/or dilute the Joomla trademark which risks causing harm to the entire community. If the site is generally supportive of the Joomla Project and CMS product, and not misleading, such requests are usually approved and a license is quickly granted.

Please note that a FAQs is not an official policy document, but rather an informal effort to give readers useful and understandable information.

We at Open Source Matters love it when people talk about Joomla!, build businesses around Joomla! and produce products that make life better for Joomla! users and developers. We do, however, have a trademark, which we are obliged to protect. The trademark gives us the exclusive right to use the term as the name of websites, services, businesses and products. Although those rights are exclusively ours, we are happy to give people permission to use the term under certain circumstances.

Open Source Matters/Joomla! wants to both protect the specific trademark (“Joomla!”) while also encourage brand recognition, marketshare, and mindshare, by using derivatives of the name to connote a connection of the software to Joomla. Permission from OSM is required to use the Joomla name or logo as part of any project, product, service, domain or company name. One of the criteria to use the name Joomla in a domain name is to make clear that your organization is not a legal entity of OSM or the Joomla project. By displaying one of the following disclaimers on your website you help the project protecting the trademark, while you can be granted permission to use the name Joomla! in your domain name.

About the Trademark

When used alone, the Joomla! brandmark must appear with the TM (trademark) symbol.
